Your Job is to Trust God
His job is everything else
Take it from a recovering control freak — words like “give up” or “surrender” can be enough to send some of us into a panic. The great insanity here is this: the relentless need to control what we simply can’t control. We don’t trust anyone else to take the wheel — not even God. And so, our lives often feel swallowed by chaos. It clouds our minds, fills us with anxiety, and makes it hard to breathe or see a way forward.
But there is a way out: learn to trust God. Lean in, one small step at a time.
Learning to Trust
For many of us, trust doesn’t come with a snap of the fingers. If you’ve spent much of your life not trusting others, you won’t suddenly flip a switch and trust God completely. It’s a journey — a series of small steps, of falling down and getting back up again. Thank goodness, God is patient with us.
There is room at the foot of the cross for all your fears and worries. In prayer, we can lay them down before Christ, knowing He will handle what we can’t — and step away, grateful and humbled.
That’s what I try to do. And then... about 3.5 seconds later, I run back, pick those fears up, and throw them right back on my shoulders. Ugh. Why do I do this?
For me, I see the cycle I’ve kept myself in. I may not have created the first circumstances, but I’ve made plenty of decisions over the years (maybe 20, maybe 30) that kept it all going. The blocks fall down; I build them right back up — every day. Somewhere along the way, I convinced myself I was the only one who could manage it all. That’s how a control freak is born.
If only I had opened my heart sooner and trusted God to handle it, life wouldn’t have felt like one endless series of band-aids — put on, ripped off, repeat.
Prayer and Surrender
Surrendering to God isn’t giving up. It’s giving over. It’s letting go and trusting that God can handle it far better than we can.
So, how do we do that? Prayer.
Through daily prayer, I feel closer to God. And the closer I feel, the easier it becomes to open my heart and hand it over to Him.
Does this mean God gives me everything I ask for? Absolutely not. Like a good parent, He gives us what we need — not always what we want. Prayers are always answered, though not always in the way or timing we expect. Some answers take longer to understand.
Here’s what I’ve come to accept — and what I’ve forgiven myself for: I have been my own biggest roadblock in getting closer to God. Mostly because I thought I knew better. I couldn’t let go of control.
If you take anything from this, let it be this:
👉 God can do more with your surrender than you can ever do with your own control.
What’s one small thing you can hand over to God today?
✨ Be blessed. You’re not alone on this path.

Amen
